Third Root Practitioners

About ten years ago, Kate Johnson moved from her native Chi town to dance across New York City's stages. Little did she know, her journey would lead her to her best platform – a 6 foot yoga mat where she could dim the lights and just open her heart.
When she discovered Third Root, sitting squarely at the intersection of innovative health care and social justice activism, Kate knew she'd found her way home. She became a member of the cooperative in July 2011, and now teaches yoga, coordinates programs, and is inspired daily by co-workers and community at Third Root. She also teaches yoga and mindfulness meditation in public schools throughout NYC.
In Kate's yoga classes, students are guided to explore their range of abilities, use their breath to open spaces that feel closed, and rest in their truest expression of themselves. Bodily freedom – the ability to move our bodies as we choose, to breathe easily and fully, to have a general sense of well-being – this is a human right. Kate encourages students to approach yoga as an embodiment of freedom, and allow the practice to help us connect more deeply with ourselves, with each other, and with the world around us.
Kate received her 200-hr teaching certification from Laughing Lotus Yoga Center in 2006, and is currently completing a 300+ hour Mindfulness Yoga and Meditation teacher training at Spirit Rock Center in California, and a meditation teacher training at The Interdependence Project. She holds a BFA in Dance from The Ailey School/Fordham University, and a MA in Performance Studies from NYU.
