Why a Community Health Center?
Third Root Community Health Center sits comfortably in the middle of a neighborhood saturated with cultural, economic and social diversity, an area of Brooklyn referred to as Flatbush, Kensington or Ditmas Park. We believe every neighborhood should have a friendly and financially accessible resource for wellness and healthcare, and hope to be one such model for our area off of Cortelyou Road.
Being a Community Health Center means providing quality, continuous care — not just in the office or in the clinic, but in the neighborhood. It means thinking of health within a person’s body and within a community, and working toward the vitality of both. Third Root strives to be a welcoming clinic for many different social and cultural communities. Recognizing difference and the context of oppression and privilege, Third Root strives to provide culturally appropriate and informed care.
We are located on the ground floor, just off a commercial road in Flatbush, next to a daycare and down the street from a senior center, so our clinic sees a lot of people pass by. It is our hope that the clinic will become a community space, where neighbors come to learn about their own health, receive healthcare, and take part in a larger community healing process.
Being a community health center also means being accountable to the community in which we are located, engaging us about how to provide the best care for them. We are doing this through Community Health Forums at bookstores, coffeeshops, churches, senior centers, and other spaces where people gather. We also have a Community Advisory Board comprised of long-time members of the neighborhood, who are involved in the community and are invested in building the long-term health of themselves and those around them.
As a community health center, Third Root seeks to create community well-being and vitality, by working through the differences that divide us and building upon the ways in which our interests overlap.
